Suggested Actions for Straight Allies
Allies are incredibly important to any fight, and in particular one like this, where many might assume there’s an adversarial relationship between gay and straight people. Whatever your reasons for joining and supporting this fight, know that you are welcome and appreciated.
Come out. Straight allies need to let others know they exist almost as much as gay people do. Many who trade in homophobic remarks and actions succeed because they think they have support. Speak up and let them know you believe in fairness and equality. Don’t let people feel comfortable with their prejudices. And know that you have straight allies who are just waiting for someone else to take the lead. Be that person, and you’ll probably find you’re in good company.
Help create “safe space.” Let your gay and lesbian neighbors know that they are welcome in the spaces you create, whether it’s in your home, at your place of business, or in your house of worship. Search the internet for information about how to create a welcoming congregation. Put up a rainbow flag—a universally-understood sign of gay pride—in your window.
